Predicting rogue waves in random oceanic sea states
Using the inverse spectral theory of the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation we correlate the development of rogue waves in oceanic sea states characterized by the JONSWAP spectrum with the proximity to homoclinic solutions of the NLS equation. We find in numerical simulations of the NLS equation that rogue waves develop for JONSWAP initial data that is “near” NLS homoclinic data, while rogue ...
متن کامل2 00 1 Freak Waves in Random Oceanic Sea States
Freak waves are very large, rare events in a random ocean wave train. Here we study the numerical generation of freak waves in a random sea state characterized by the JONSWAP power spectrum. We assume, to cubic order in nonlinearity, that the wave dynamics are governed by the nonlinear Schroedinger (NLS) equation. We identify two parameters in the power spectrum that control the nonlinear dynam...

We present an application of a novel Variational Wave Acquisition Stereo System (VWASS) for the estimation of the wave surface height of oceanic sea states. Specifically, we show that VWASS video technology combined with statistical techniques based on Euler Characteristics of random fields provides a new paradigm for the prediction of wave extremes expected over a given area of the ocean. © 20...

متن کاملA Variational Wave Acquisition Stereo System for the 3-d Reconstruction of Oceanic Sea States
We propose a novel remote sensing technique that infers the three-dimensional wave form and radiance of oceanic sea states via a variational stereo imagery formulation. In this setting, the shape and radiance of the wave surface are minimizers of a composite cost functional which combines a data fidelity term and smoothness priors on the unknowns. The solution of a system of coupled partial dif...
